Patient's Query

Hello,

I am a distressed 25-year-old female who has recently been diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). I have been prescribed medication to manage the tachycardia, but I am feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about what to expect. Kindly answer the following questions.

  1. How does POTS affect the heart rate?
  2. Are there lifestyle changes or additional therapies that could complement the medication?
  3. What are the possible side effects and interactions?

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) indicates an increase in heart rate while standing from sitting or lying position. At least 30 beats per minute increase with a change in blood pressure. Symptoms include palpitations, dizziness, headaches, and nausea. It can be easily managed with medicines and certain measures to control heart rate such as the following.

  1. Drink adequate water to maintain hydration.
  2. Stand slowly from a recumbent position, first sit for a minute and then stand.

Kindly consult a specialist, talk to them, and take medications for your condition.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
