Can someone be pregnant despite getting periods after unprotected sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had unprotected sex last month. I got my period nine days later, and it lasted for seven days. It was heavy and red. However, I missed my period for the next month. I have not had sex since my last sex. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. Is there any chance that I get pregnant from my last sex?

Please help me.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

It is highly unlikely that you have been pregnant since your last sexual encounter. You had a heavy, red period nine days after, which strongly suggests you were not pregnant. Additionally, taking multiple pregnancy tests months later, all negative, confirms this.

Irregular periods can be caused by stress, hormonal imbalances, or underlying conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The movements you feel in your abdomen could be due to anxiety or digestive issues rather than pregnancy.

If your period does not return soon, consider consulting again for hormone testing and evaluation. Managing stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle may also help regulate your cycle.

Reply to me if you have more concerns or questions.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
