Can Saccharomyces boulardii cure SIBO?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 22-year-old female, and I overdosed on Urografin while taking a film. Afterwards, I had loose stools, cramping, bloating, and gas after stools and eating. I tried Saccharomyces boulardii two times a day for two weeks, and my symptoms started to get worse after a point. Then I stopped, and it got better. So I took Rifaximin for 20 days to heal potential SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), and I suspected my cramping was much better after stools, but I started to get candida symptoms. Who knows, maybe I even had it before, so I just did a stool test and got "medium" in stool for Candida albicans. Now, it has been three days since I discontinued Rifaximin. What should I do? Could it be better to take antifungals or L-glutamine, or should I try Saccharomyces boulardii again, or could Saccharomyces boulardii have caused my SIBO, and could reawaken the bacteria? I do think I may need to repopulate with good bacteria, but I do not know if it would cause SIBO again, or the way to do it. I appreciate the help.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I am sorry about your medical condition, and I am glad that you are paying attention to changes in your body system. But do not worry. I am here to take care of you. Regarding your symptoms, I believe you have developed diarrhea following the use of Urographin.

Yes, I will advise you to continue with Saccharomyces boulardii again for two weeks to stop the effect of the radioactive substance in your system.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
