What are effective treatments for psoriasis in a 20-year-old?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My teenage daughter is devastated by her psoriasis. She is 20, and these skin patches are severely impacting her self-esteem. She no longer feels comfortable wearing short sleeves or going swimming. The patches are red, scaly, and spreading despite trying everything from natural remedies to prescription creams. Could there be a hormonal connection? Her school life is also being affected badly.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune inflammatory condition of the skin that often begins with a small patch and gradually spreads to other areas. It can be emotionally challenging, especially for teenagers, as it affects self-esteem and daily life. Studies suggest a strong connection between psoriasis and gut or gastrointestinal health. Dietary and lifestyle changes play a crucial role in managing psoriasis. Encourage your daughter to avoid spicy, sour, and wheat-based bakery items and instead focus on consuming balanced, whole foods. Other helpful practices include:

  1. Getting adequate sleep (around eight hours).
  2. Mild to moderate exercise.
  3. Using medicated moisturizers.
  4. Drinking lukewarm water throughout the day.

These steps, when followed consistently, are beneficial and have helped many people manage or even clear their psoriasis.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
