What is the treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am seeking your help as a survivor of physical abuse from a broken marriage. Since leaving that situation, I have been struggling with severe symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder. I often experience flashbacks, anxiety, and prolonged periods of deep sadness. I am worried about how these conditions might be affecting my brain and overall mental health. I have been considering seeking psychiatric help but I am unsure where to start. Could you guide effective treatment options, including therapy and medication? I need to understand how to manage these symptoms and improve my mental well-being.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for taking help from a psychiatrist. I can understand your situation and your problem. You may have a major depressive disorder with post-traumatic stress disorder. There is non-pharmacological management for it, you should try to follow the below guidelines to deal with it. It will help you. You should exercise 30 to 45 minutes daily, like at least going for a walk. You should do meditation for 20 minutes daily, just sit in one place in a comfortable position, and try to concentrate on your normal breathing. Do not stop or force yourself to stop your thoughts, just let it be. It will help you to relax. You should eat healthy home-cooked foods, and avoid junk foods. You must drink enough water. You should spend quality time with friends and family daily, or do video calls if you are living away from your family. You should spend time on creative hobbies like reading good books, writing journals, painting, drawing, and learning new skills, language, or musical instruments. You should get seven to eight hours of sleep daily. You must avoid tobacco alcohol or any substance abuse. Live your life, do not just waste it. Be bold and confident. You should start taking the tablet Escitalopram 10 mg daily in the morning after breakfast.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please, let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.
