How do pulmonary fibrosis and ILD affect life span?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

The patient is 74 years old and 80 percent lungs are affected with pulmonary fibrosis and ILD. We are giving oxygen, and meditation is being done. May I know what is the life span for those patients?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Pulmonary fibrosis and interstitial lung disease (ILD) are progressive conditions that can significantly impact life expectancy, especially when they are advanced, as indicated by 80 percent lung involvement. In elderly patients, like someone who is 74 years old, these conditions can be particularly challenging due to reduced lung function and overall resilience.

Average prognosis

For patients with advanced pulmonary fibrosis and ILD, median survival times can vary significantly based on several factors. Some patients with advanced pulmonary fibrosis may have a life expectancy ranging from two to five years, but this can vary widely. Advanced age, high lung involvement, and oxygen dependency can reduce the prognosis.

Oxygen therapy

Continuous oxygen therapy can improve quality of life and ease breathing, but it may not significantly slow disease progression. In some cases, it may help reduce strain on the heart and other organs, which can impact overall health positively.

Supportive care

Palliative care, which focuses on managing symptoms and improving quality of life, can be beneficial. This approach may include medications, physical therapy, and even meditation and relaxation techniques to help with breathing difficulties.

Individual variation

Every patient is different. Some people with advanced pulmonary fibrosis or ILD can live longer than expected, especially if other health conditions are well-managed and they respond well to supportive treatments.

Ultimately, the progression of ILD and pulmonary fibrosis varies from person to person.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
