How much time does it take for the pain and swelling to resolve after PFT surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently developed pyogenic flexor tenosynovitis (PFT) in my left middle finger. I had two washout surgeries, the first had a lot of pus, and the second did not have any. I started first on IV antibiotics and then swapped to oral after the second surgery. I am not in pain anymore and the scar seems to be healing well. The stitches were removed yesterday, 11 days after the second surgery. However, the bottom part of the finger is still pretty swollen. It is only slightly painful if I apply gentle pressure. The doctor prescribed another week of Co-amoxiclav antibiotics just in case. The culture came back clean, so we do not know, which bacteria caused it. I would like a second opinion and check if this level of swelling is normal 12 days after the surgery. I have attached pictures. Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, I cannot find your attached picture. I apologize for any inconvenience caused. Mild pain and swelling are signs of inflammation which is the body's natural response to injury. As long as there is no discharge of pus and you do not have a fever; with a negative culture result an infection seems unlikely. Culture media is able to grow common organisms you might have been exposed to. I wish you a quick recovery from your surgery. Please my apologies once again for not being able to view your picture.

Thank you.
