What is the treatment for rectal prolapse?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I may have a rectal prolapse, but I am not sure. I am a gay 21-year-old male who is sexually active. Please help.
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Regarding your symptoms, I believe you have developed a rectal prolapse. You will need an operation to correct the prolapse to enable adequate defecation. Also, after the surgery, please reduce anal sex.
I hope this information will help you.
Thanks.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
How sure are you that it is a prolapse? If you need more information. I have researched a little about it and also wanted to ask if I do not get the operation anytime soon, will it get worse?
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
It is a rectal prolapse because the prolapse is a complete ring occupying the whole anal sphincter. Yes, the prolapse could get worse if you delay. However, you can try the following remedies:
- Push the rectum inside.
- Sit on warm water mixed with Dettol twice daily.
- Put intrarectal annual rectal suppository twice daily.
I hope this information will help you.
Thanks.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
This is all while straining. While squatting, it will stay out. Please help.
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
It is a grade 1 (minor) rectal prolapse that comes out with strain and may return immediately without squatting or intraabdominal pressure. So, I am satisfied, and it is a good sign that this may work without going for any major surgery. So, carry out the remedies I sent you for at least one week and reply with any improvements.
I hope this information will help you.
Thanks.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thanks for the reply.
What are the chances that this would develop into grade 2 or 3? Does that happen often? Also, while having bowel movements, I usually have to push hard every time, and that is when the prolapse comes out most. Would that cause it to prolapse more? And then it probably depends on other factors, but how large can it get?
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Yes, it can upgrade to stage 2 or 3 if it is non-treated or poorly treated or if there is constipation ( hard stool), and this can become irreversible. Even if you push it in, it will still prolapse and may require immediate surgery when it is severe. So, you should not push harder during defecation. In addition, to help with your strain, I will advise you to take a lot of water after meals, eat a lot of fruits and leafy vegetables, and take syrup liquid Paraffin 20 ml daily to soften your stool.
I hope this information will help you.
Thanks.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
So, it will progress if I continue to strain during defecation. And will anal sex also cause this to progress? I am usually quite active. How much of the rectum can prolapse?
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Yes, it will progress if you keep applying strain during defecation, especially when you have a firm stool. Of course, anal sex will continue to make it worse if the person's penis is very long and extensive, and finally, it will get to stage 3, which is severe, and this will be irreversible and will require an operation.
I hope this information will help you.
Thanks.
