Is unprotected sex safe 6 months after RhoGAM injection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My partner received the RhoGAM injection after giving birth six months ago. We are considering becoming intimate again, including the possibility of unprotected sex. I would like to know if there are any medical concerns or risks related to this, especially regarding pregnancy or the effect of coming inside her. Is it safe at this point?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I completely understand your concerns.

These kinds of queries are rather common, particularly after a big life event like giving birth. As long as she is physically well and feels at ease, it is usually okay to resume sexual activity, including ejaculation, if your partner gave birth six months ago and received the RhoGAM or Rho(D) immune globulin injection (which is frequently administered to Rh-negative women to prevent difficulties in future pregnancies).

The RhoGAM injection does not affect your ability to have sex or interfere with sexual activities. It is not intended to affect present sexual health but rather to safeguard future pregnancies.

Most women have healed from childbirth, whether it was a C-section (cesarean section) or a vaginal delivery, by six months after giving birth. However, each recovery is unique, so it is critical to make sure your partner feels emotionally and physically prepared. Since fertility can return before her first postpartum period, it is a good idea to talk about contraception if you are not planning to get pregnant again soon.

It is always a good idea to check in with her healthcare practitioner if there are any lingering health issues or questions. However, from a medical perspective, having intercourse, including ejaculation, during this period is usually safe as long as you are both healthy, in alignment, and comfortable.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert if there is any query.

Thank you.
