Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I went to MEPS today to get a physical examination to join the AirForce. I passed everything except for the urine glucose which was 250 mmHg. I have never had issues or symptoms in the past. I get a physical examination every year and no concerns till now. I did eat a healthy meal prior to the test. I drank Gatorade, three glasses of apple juice, a bagel and cream cheese, bacon, and eggs. I am not overweight. I need to retest in a week. I was wondering if it is possible to get a false positive result and also if I cut out all sugar will it go down? Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You had a huge load of sugar before the test. I would suggest getting HbA1c testing or fasting blood sugar (fasting after 12 hours) to check for diabetes or prediabetes. Definitely cutting down on the sugar and carb intake by 50% will be helpful. A sports drink is not advisable. I hope this helps let me know if you need further assistance. Just a note: being overweight (BMI (body mass index) more than 24 can put anyone at risk for prediabetes or diabetes), the kidneys should technically handle a large sugar load and not excrete it in the urine, if you have some sugar in the urine, it is very wise to repeat it and also to rule out diabetes. This time please no excessive sugar intake before the urine test. If possible just drink plain water for 12 hours before the test. I hope you find this helpful.

Thank you.
