What medication can be used to delay periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I need to delay my period for my marriage as it falls on the same date. So I need to know how and what medicine I should take to have a safe period delay. Please reply.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I can give you clear and practical details, and it is safe and commonly advised. The best and safest method is to use Norethisterone (tablet) 5 mg tablet three times daily every eight hours. Start three days before your expected period. Continue until your wedding or events are over. Period returns two to four days after stopping.

You can safely delay periods up to 10 to 14 days. This medicine is not used for long-term us.

Do not use if you have:

  1. Pregnancy or chance of pregnancy.
  2. History of blood clots.
  3. DVT (deep vein thrombosis) and liver disease.
  4. Breast cancer.
  5. Severe migraine with aura.
  6. Uncontrolled high blood pressure.

Common side effects (usually mild and temporary) such as bloating, breast tenderness, mood changes, mild nausea, and slight weight gain from water retention.

You cannot use emergency pills, herbal remedies, or random hormone pills. These can cause heavy bleeding or cycle disturbance.

If your period is very close means one to two days away. It may not work reliably. In that case, see a gynecologist urgently for an alternative plan. After stopping, period may be slightly heavier or lighter.

I hope this information is helpful to you.

Thanks.
