What are the ways to reduce screen time exposure?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 7-year-old kid watches television and plays video games without giving much movement to his body every day. I think that he has excessive screen exposure while watching television and video games. Nowadays, he is not sleeping properly and he also has memory problems. Do these symptoms indicate that his excess screen exposure is affecting his cognition? If it is so, how to reduce this habit and make him an active kid? How to make him play on the ground with his friends?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Excessive screen time can lead to:

  1. Poor sleep quality.

  2. Reduced physical activity leads to health issues.

  3. Impaired memory.

  4. Behavioral issues and a reduced attention span.

Establish clear rules for screen time.

  1. Limit screen time to no more than one hour per day.

  2. Develop a daily schedule that includes specific times for watching television, playing video games, homework, meals, and physical activities. Consistency helps children understand and adapt to new routines.

  3. Make outdoor play a part of your child's daily routine. Set aside time each day for them to play outside. Find activities that interest your child, such as sports, dance, martial arts, or simple outdoor games.

  4. Keep screens out of your child's bedroom.

  5. Engage in physical activities together as a family.

  6. Arrange playdates with friends and encourage group activities.

  7. Praise and reward your child for spending time away from screens and engaging in physical activities.

  8. Establish a regular bedtime routine.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
