I would like your guidance on the impact of screen and headphone use on my two sons, aged 9 and 13.

On weekdays, apart from school, they have limited physical activity, including daily taekwondo. On weekends, they have one hour of swimming and a 30-minute music class. Most of the remaining time is spent on laptops for studies and watching content, usually 90 to 95 percent of the time with headphones at moderate volume.

Screen use is approximately three to four hours per weekday and significantly higher on weekends, possibly eight to nine or more hours per day. This includes screen use during meals almost every time and also 30 to 60 minutes before sleep, often in the dark.

My questions are:

  1. Are these screen and headphone usage levels within acceptable limits for their ages?

  2. If not, what are the recommended limits for recreational screen time on weekdays and weekends?

  3. Are there risks from prolonged daily headphone use, even at moderate volume?

  4. What are the effects of combined screen and headphone use during meals and before bedtime?
