Why does a woman have body tremors and a pounding heart?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a female who weighs 92.5 pounds and is 4'11" tall. My condition usually gets worse when I am nervous and even when resting. I feel tension in my body. Sometimes it aches, and from my symptoms, I can think that I do not have a steady body. Although it is not very visible, it is no longer normal. Sometimes I can see my clothes moving, like my heart pounding, and I bet it's due to an excessive heart rate.

  1. What is the possible diagnosis for a shaking body, from the feet, shoulders, and especially my voice?

  2. How can I find a solution for this, especially for my voice, because it affects me as a student?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Your symptoms of body shaking affecting the feet, shoulders, and voice, along with tension, occasional aches, and noticeable heart pounding that worsens with nervousness, could be related to several possible causes, including essential tremor, anxiety-related tremor, overactive thyroid, or other neurological or metabolic conditions. The fact that the tremor is more noticeable during stress and affects your voice suggests that both physical and emotional factors may be contributing.

Since this is impacting your daily life and studies, it is essential to consult a doctor for a thorough evaluation, which may include a neurological examination, thyroid function tests, and a heart rhythm assessment. In the meantime, managing stress through breathing exercises, mindfulness, adequate sleep, and limiting caffeine intake can help reduce tremor severity. If anxiety is a significant trigger, counseling or therapy alongside medical treatment may also improve symptoms.

Treatment for body and voice tremors depends on the underlying cause, so the first step is a thorough medical evaluation. If the tremor is due to essential tremor, medications such as Propranolol or Primidone may be prescribed to help control symptoms. If it is anxiety-related, then therapy, relaxation techniques, and, in some cases, anti-anxiety medication can be beneficial.

For tremors linked to an overactive thyroid, treating the thyroid problem often improves symptoms. Voice tremors can sometimes be improved through speech therapy, which strengthens vocal control and reduces strain. Regardless of the cause, lifestyle measures such as reducing caffeine, getting adequate sleep, managing stress through deep breathing or meditation, and engaging in regular gentle exercise can help reduce tremor intensity. If the tremor worsens or is accompanied by weakness, numbness, or other neurological symptoms, immediate medical review is necessary.

I hope this answers your query.

Let me know if I need to assist you further.
