Which insect repellants are safe and effective?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 32-year-old male living on the outskirts of my country where there are a lot of mosquitoes and other insects. I am concerned about protecting myself from mosquito bites and would like to know about effective insect repellents. Can you recommend any insect-repellent products that are safe and effective? How often should I apply them? Do they have any side effects on the skin?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Yes, it is very important to protect yourself from mosquito bites, to prevent mosquito-borne diseases. There are natural and chemical insect repellents.

First the most effective is DEET (N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide). It is available in lotion form mostly. Safer concentration is from 10 to 30 percent, more than that may cause skin irritation. Other options may include:

Picaridin, which is suitable for oily skin types but is less effective than DEET, lemon eucalyptus oil, if you want a natural one, this will do. Permethrin sprays for clothing are not for the skin.

When applying insect repellents, follow the instructions on the label.

Apply the repellent evenly to exposed skin surfaces, but avoid applying it to cuts, wounds, or irritated skin.

Avoid applying repellents to areas around the eyes and mouth.

Reapply the repellent as necessary, especially if you are sweating heavily.

Most importantly, do a patch test in a small area of skin with little amount of the repellent. If there are no signs of allergies, you can proceed with widespread use.. If any redness or irritation, avoid further use.

Several plants like citronella, marigold, rosemary, and basil can also be a helpful addition for mosquito control.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
