Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 25-year-old female. I noticed rashes after I switched my skincare products to a ceramide toner, a kojic acid toner, Simple light moisturiser, and Hamotougi sunscreen. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

You have mentioned developing rashes after switching to a new skincare routine, which includes:

  • Ceramide toner (helps restore skin barrier function).

  • Kojic acid toner (a skin-lightening agent that inhibits melanin production).

  • Simple Light Moisturiser (lightweight hydrating lotion).

  • Hatomugi sunscreen (contains Coix seed extract and UV filters).

Given the timing, this is likely contact dermatitis (skin inflammation caused by direct contact with an irritant or allergen) or an irritation reaction to one or more of these products. Kojic acid is known to irritate sensitive skin, and some individuals may also react to components in sunscreens or preservatives in toners.

I would suggest you:

  1. Stop all new products immediately.

  • Let your skin rest for at least five to seven days without active or potentially irritating ingredients.

Use only a gentle cleanser, like:

  • Cetaphil cleanser, mild fragrance-free face wash.

  • Follow with a fragrance-free moisturiser to maintain skin hydration.

Apply 1percent hydrocortisone cream (a mild topical steroid)

  • Use once daily for three to five days on the affected areas.

  • Avoid long-term use without medical supervision.

Avoid sun exposure during this period.

  • Even gentle sunscreens can irritate already sensitised skin.

If symptoms worsen or persist:

  • See a dermatologist for a patch test (a diagnostic test to identify the exact allergen or irritant).

  • Consider oral antihistamines such as cetirizine (an anti-allergy medication) if itching is severe.

 I hope this helps.

Kindly revert if there are any queries.

Thank you.
