This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My daughter has developed a rash on her stomach, chest, back, and neck, but I can not figure out why. She is not sick, and nothing has changed with her food, medicine, soap, etc.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Rashes on babies can be caused by allergies or various infections. The description of the rash usually provides a clue about the cause. If the rash has a sudden onset and appears throughout the body with red, itchy patches and slightly elevated borders, it is most likely due to an allergy. Check for possible allergens such as new clothes, bedding, food, garden pollens, or animal dander. On the other hand, rashes that are more like macules, papules, or pustules may be due to infections. Since your baby is fully immunized, most of these rashes will likely resolve on their own.

However, there are a few situations where you should consult a pediatrician immediately. These include a history of contact with someone who has had chickenpox in the last 15 days, signs of fever, vomiting, reduced feeding, or lethargy, which are warning signs. Additionally, swelling of the lips, wheezing, or tongue swelling could indicate a serious allergy. Sharing pictures of the rash would be very helpful for making an accurate diagnosis and providing better clinical advice.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
