Had major STEMI (ST-elevation myocardial infarction) four months ago with ejection fraction down to 28 percent despite stents and optimal medical therapy. The cardiologist talked about an eventual heart transplant if there is no improvement. I found a clinic offering stem cell treatment claiming to "regenerate damaged heart tissue and improve ejection fraction by 10 to 15 percent." They use bone marrow stem cells reinjected through cardiac catheterization. Some published studies look promising but cardiologists seem skeptical. Could this improve my heart function? What specific questions should I ask the clinic? What realistic outcomes might I expect? Are any risks specific to cardiac applications? How do I distinguish between legitimate therapy and exploitation of desperate patients?
