What could cause a crater-like pattern on tonsils along with irregular sleep patterns in a 5-month pregnant female?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 20-year-old Caucasian female and five months pregnant. I have two bumps on my tonsils maybe the size of a lentil or smaller. They look like cysts but they could also just be normal or something. I have enlarged tonsils since at least last year when I had some bouts of Streptococcus or something. I had been given antibiotics like Amoxicillin for Strep throat problems. I have a crater in my tonsils. Also, my tonsils do not really bother me (I do not think I have tonsillitis or anything) but I want to make sure there is nothing wrong with them. I have Medicaid and I do not know if I can see an otolaryngologist or not. My husband or I might be a mono carrier. I do not smoke or drink and nobody smokes around me ever.I just overcame a sickness with sneezing, coughing, stuffy nose, sore throat, etc. But, no fever, and sometimes I still feel a slight sore throat but it will go away soon thereafter. And I have a feeling it will go away altogether soon. Tonsil stones do occur kind a lot to me but I always get them out with a Q-tip and can make me bleed and my tonsils will feel sore after. I have crater tonsils. I am overweight and suffering from obesity. I have no children. It is painful to drink or eat anything. I have no family medical history, except slight mental health issues like depression, but nothing crazy. I like to eat poorly. I do not brush as often as I should, but I always get my tongue thoroughly, rinse with mouthwash, and I always at least brush whenever my teeth do not feel clean. I take Melatonin every night for sleep, one prenatal vitamin each night, and the lowest dose of the antidepressant called the tablet Effexor (Venlafaxine) every night as well. I have had pretty irregular sleep patterns lately. I have been sleeping all day and staying up all night. Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.I have seen all the photos (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). Your tonsils are enlarged right now, like you said but not infected. Also if you have recurrent tonsillitis or tonsil stones, it is better to undergo tonsillectomy after your delivery. As of now, you do not need any treatment but at a later stage, I would advise you to undergo a tonsillectomy. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and undergo the surgery with their consent. If during pregnancy, you get throat pain you may start Betadine mouth gargles (Povidone iodine, Glycerol, Menthol) and antihistamines like the tablet Allegra (Fexofenadine). I hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
