Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I have been trying to cut down on sugar and heard that xylitol, a sugar substitute, might be a good alternative. However, I recently read something about sugar alcohols like xylitol and wondered if they are safe, especially for someone with a history of heart issues. I had a myocardial infarction a few years ago and have been very cautious about my diet ever since. Is xylitol safe for me to use, or should I be worried about its impact on my heart health? Are there any other sugar substitutes you would recommend for someone in my situation? I want to make sure I am not putting myself at risk while trying to manage my sugar intake.
Please guide.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol derived from fruits and vegetables. It has a sweet taste and is used as a sugar substitute. However, as you pointed out the risk of heart disease associated with it. Well, that is true recent research has pointed out the development of blood clots with the use of these sweeteners and thus can lead to a heart attack (myocardial infarction and stroke). So I recommend as a sugar substitute you can use stevia artificial sweetener.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
