Hello doctor,

I am reaching out because I am concerned about some bumpy/prominent veins that occurred just below the glans of my penis after using a penis extender three months ago. The appearance of the veins has been the same since I quit using the device three months ago, and I am afraid it is permanent now. It is causing a lot of anxiety.

They are soft to the touch and do not hurt. It is more of a cosmetic issue. They are visible both when I am flaccid and erect. When flaccid, I can see a slightly raised area where the vein runs.

  1. Could this be a permanent varicose vein or sclerosing lymphangitis?
  2. Will it set over time?

I believe this is something called Mondor’s disease. This is a thrombosis of the superficial veins of the penis due to the injury from the penile extender. Fortunately, this should not cause you any problems in terms of sexual activity or pain. And in a majority of cases, it just goes away with time. Unfortunately, there is not really any known treatment for it.

I suggest you follow the instructions below:

  1. Anti-inflammatory medication for a week.
  2. Cold compress.
  3. Avoid sexual activity for a month or two.
  4. Heparin-based ointments for local application for a week.
  5. If all fails and it is causing you significant concern, surgery is the only option, but this is the last resort.
