Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been working and playing cricket in direct sunlight for the past five to six years. Because of this, my face has become much darker than the rest of my body, and the colour difference is quite noticeable.
Currently, I am not exposed to the sun as much as before, but the tanning and uneven skin tone on my face remain. I would like to know what treatment options are available to reduce this tan and improve my overall skin tone.
Can you please guide me on whether treatments like chemical peel, laser, or topical creams would be suitable for me?
Also, how long does it usually take to see results, and what precautions should I follow during the treatment?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query.
I understand why this is bothering you. What you are noticing is actually quite common, especially with regular outdoor sports like cricket.
Long hours in strong sunlight can lead to persistent tanning and uneven skin tone. This happens because UV (ultraviolet) exposure triggers your skin to produce more melanin as a natural protective response. That is why your face (which is more exposed) looks darker than the rest of your body. The reassuring part is that this type of tanning usually improves with the right care and reduced sun exposure.
The most important step is sun protection, because no treatment will work properly if your skin keeps getting exposed to UV rays.
Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 50 (sun protection factor) or higher every morning.
Reapply every three to four hours if you are outdoors.
Wear a cap or hat while playing or staying in the sun.
To help your skin recover and lighten the tan, you can try the following:
You can apply a small, pea-sized amount of Kojivit plus cream (including Kojic acid dipalmitate, Arbutin, and Glycolic acid) at night on alternate days, followed by a moisturizer (it can be slightly drying).
It contains glycolic acid, which helps in gentle exfoliation and gradually lightens pigmentation.
Continue this for about one to two months for visible improvement.
With consistent care, you may start noticing changes in four to eight weeks, while more visible evening of skin tone can take around two to three months.
If the pigmentation is deeper or does not improve enough:
Superficial chemical peels (like Glycolic or Lactic acid peels) can help remove the tanned outer layer.
In more stubborn cases, dermatological treatments like Q-switched laser (a specialized, non-invasive device that delivers ultra-short, high-intensity pulses of light to precisely target skin pigment, such as melanin or tattoo ink, without harming surrounding tissue) may be considered, but these are usually not the first step.
A few things to avoid during this time:
Excessive sun exposure without protection.
Harsh scrubs or frequent exfoliation.
Over-the-counter bleaching creams can irritate and worsen pigmentation.
With steady care and protection, your skin tone should gradually even out over the next few months.
If you would like, you can share a clear photo in natural light, which can help determine whether this is just tanning or if there is any additional pigmentation issue like melasma (a common, chronic skin condition causing brown or grey-brown patches to appear on the face) or post-inflammatory changes.
I hope this answers your query.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
