Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have experienced tanning on my face and neck since I was 15 years old. Now I am 24 years old and mostly stay indoors. But the same black color on my face never goes away. Is this a permanent tan?
Please suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and can understand your concern.
It sounds like you have had persistent facial and neck discoloration for nine years. This does not necessarily mean the pigmentation is permanent, but it does suggest a long-standing condition that needs careful evaluation.
Here is a breakdown:
Why does this happen?
When skin is exposed to UV (ultraviolet) rays (from the sun), it increases melanin production, leading to tanning. In most cases, tans fade within months if there is no further sun exposure. But when it is prolonged and persistent (like nine years), it may be due to:
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): If there is acne, rashes, or irritation, pigmentation can linger.
Melasma: A common condition that causes symmetrical brown patches on the face and neck, often triggered by sun exposure and sometimes hormones.
Lichen planus pigmentosus or other pigmentary disorders: These are chronic and can cause darkening.
What can you do?
Sun protection is crucial. Even while staying indoors, indirect sun exposure (like through windows) can worsen pigmentation. Use sunscreen daily.
Have gentle skincare.
Avoid harsh scrubbing or irritating products that can make pigmentation worse.
Topical treatments like Hydroquinone (under a doctor’s guidance), azelaic acid, kojic acid, vitamin C, and retinoids may help lighten pigmentation.
See a dermatologist. They can evaluate the exact cause (melasma vs. PIH, also known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, vs. other causes) and tailor treatment accordingly.
I hope this answers your query.
Let me know if I need to assist you further.
Thank you.
