How to manage severe hair loss following pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 31-year-old female, weighing approximately 112 pounds and standing at a height of 5 feet 4 inches. Following pregnancy, I have been encountering significant hair fall, including the development of a bald patch. This issue has persisted for a year now, and I am currently breastfeeding my child. I am regularly taking my postnatal vitamins. Unfortunately, my hair has been progressively thinning over time. Additionally, I have observed that my hair has become dry, frizzy, and accompanied by mild dandruff, sometimes leading to an itchy scalp. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern. Firstly, I would like to inform you that hair fall after pregnancy can be attributed to hormonal fluctuations. To manage this I suggest you follow below mentioned instructions:

  1. Use mild shampoos.
  2. Wash your hair twice a week.
  3. Apply shampoo only to the scalp, avoiding the hair strands.
  4. Use conditioner for your hair.
  5. Apply a 5 % Minoxidil solution on the scalp twice a week at night, before washing your hair.
  6. Stay well-hydrated by consuming at least three liters of water daily.
  7. Incorporate plenty of green leafy vegetables and fruits into your diet.
  8. Consume muesli rich in seeds and chia seeds with milk regularly.

I hope this has helped you. Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
