Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My daughter was just prescribed Tezspire for her severe asthma and we have concerns. She is 16 years old and has struggled with asthma since infancy, but the last year has been horrific, with eight ER visits and three hospital admissions. She is currently taking Breo, Montelukast, and Spiriva and still needs albuterol multiple times daily.
She also requires oral Prednisone bursts almost monthly, which is affecting her growth and causing terrible mood swings and facial swelling. Her pulmonologist says her eosinophil count is 820, and her IgE level is over 1200. Her asthma attacks are terrifying - within minutes, she turns blue around her lips and cannot speak more than one-word sentences.
The allergist wants to start Tezspire injections every four weeks. Will this medication actually help when nothing else has worked? She is allergic to practically everything according to skin testing - allergic to practically everything according to skin testing - all pollens, dust mites, mold, cats, dogs, and several foods. Will Tezspire help with these allergies too? She also has chronic sinusitis with frequent infections and eczema that flares with her asthma attacks. How long before we know if it is working?
She is terrified of needles and anxious about the injections. What side effects should we watch for? We are desperate to find something that actually helps.
Please help me.
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Tezspire (Tezepelumab) can be highly effective in controlling severe asthma by targeting a key inflammatory pathway and may reduce the need for oral steroids, which could help with your daughter’s growth and mood swings. It can also help with some allergy symptoms, but it may not completely resolve all allergic reactions. It can take several weeks to months to see improvement. Common side effects include upper respiratory infections and reactions at the injection site. If cost is a concern, check with the manufacturer for financial assistance programs. While the injections may be daunting, they could significantly improve her asthma control and quality of life.
I hope this information helps you.
Thank you.
