Why am I getting recurrent infections with Tezepelumab?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been getting recurrent infections since starting Tezepelumab for severe asthma. I have been on it for seven months. My breathing has improved, but I have had three sinus infections, two urinary infections, and now symptoms of walking pneumonia.

I did not have frequent infections before this. I am worried whether this medication is affecting my immune system. My white blood cell count was normal at my last check.

  • Should I be on preventive antibiotics?
  • Is this medication suppressing my immunity?
  • Are there specific infections I should watch for?

I want to continue the treatment as my asthma is controlled, but these infections are affecting my daily life.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I have read your query and understand your concern.

The pattern of recurrent infections you are describing is important and should not be ignored. While this medication is not a broad immunosuppressant, it works by targeting specific pathways in the immune system involved in asthma.

In some individuals, this may slightly alter the body’s defense mechanisms and increase susceptibility to infections.

A normal white blood cell count is reassuring, but it does not provide a complete picture of immune function. Further evaluation, such as immunoglobulin levels and lymphocyte counts, may help assess your immune status more accurately.

Preventive antibiotics are not routinely recommended at this stage unless there is clear evidence of repeated or severe infections requiring such an approach.

It is important to monitor for persistent respiratory infections, worsening symptoms, or unusual infections. At the same time, maintaining good asthma control is essential.

A balanced approach would involve discussing these recurrent infections with your treating doctor to evaluate the need for further tests, possible adjustments in therapy, and strategies to reduce infection risk while continuing treatment.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
