What could cause tingling sensations and sleep issues?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 31-year-old female, in good shape, and a non-smoker. Recently, I started experiencing intense tingling sensations in my head, neck, upper back, arms, hands, legs, and feet. My hands and feet also burn, while the rest of my body feels more like discomfort than pain.

Along with these sensations, I have had persistent acid reflux, constant cold sweat, and difficulty sleeping. I went to the emergency room (ER), where they conducted tests, including heart enzyme levels, D-dimer, and an EKG (electrocardiogram). All the results came back normal, and I was discharged without a clear diagnosis.

However, my symptoms have not improved, and I am extremely concerned. What could be causing these symptoms, and what should I do next?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Your symptoms are most likely related to anxiety, which could be linked to a condition known as somatoform disorder. Somatoform disorder is a psychological condition where an individual experiences physical symptoms that cannot be explained by any identifiable organic or medical cause. These symptoms are real and can significantly impact daily life, but they stem from the brain and nervous system rather than from an underlying physical illness. It occurs when the brain involuntarily generates sensations such as pain, tingling, burning, or discomfort in response to emotional or psychological stress. This condition is often associated with heightened sensitivity to bodily sensations, amplified by stress or anxiety, leading to a persistent focus on the symptoms. Managing somatoform disorders often requires addressing the underlying anxiety or emotional triggers through relaxation techniques, cognitive-behavioral therapy, or other therapeutic interventions.

I recommend staying relaxed and focusing on positive activities. Incorporate deep breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, and aerobic exercise into your daily routine.

Ensure you get adequate sleep, avoid junk food, and continue taking multivitamins as advised.

Please share your electrocardiogram (ECG) and other lab results so I can guide you further.

I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I do not have copies of the lab work or EKG yet, as they have not been uploaded. I genuinely do not believe this is related to anxiety, especially since I have no underlying reasons for anxiety to appear suddenly or without cause.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Your symptoms of tingling and burning are not directly related to the heart. These generalized sensations are commonly associated with vitamin B12 or B6 deficiencies, particularly in individuals who follow a strict vegetarian diet.

I recommend:

  1. Vitamin B12 supplements to address potential deficiency.
  2. For acid reflux, take Omeprazole 20 mg once daily and Itopride 50 mg before meals.

I hope this helps.

Please revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
