Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I visited a dentist to have a wisdom tooth removed. Sadly, when they removed the tooth, they chipped the molar next to it. However, he told me it was my fault for having brittle teeth. He put a filling on it free of charge and sent me on my way. When I got home, I had a look at the tooth and realized he had broken about two-thirds of the tooth off. The filling was ridiculously huge and did not match the color of my other teeth. However, I was not angry. I was just happy my wisdom tooth had been removed.
The days after the tooth was removed, I was in agony, feeling a constant burning sensation in my chin and right ear, as well as my gums, and the pain was just getting worse. So I booked another appointment and explained to the dentist that not only did I think I may have a dry socket, but I was also really worried about the other broken tooth. He dismissed it, explaining it was just the dry socket.
A week later, I am still in absolute agony. I booked another appointment for the same surgery but with a different dentist. The second dentist did not really give me any explanation of what the problem was or what he would do to fix it, just kind of went to work. After he finished, he explained that he had done half a root canal, as the swelling was so bad, he could not finish placing a medicated cap on it. He told me he did not know how much I would be charged, as the principal dentist broke the tooth, and he would have to speak to him.
A week later, still in agony, I went back to finish the root canal. At this point, I have barely been able to eat, lost an excessive amount of weight, and missed countless hours of work. He pumps me full of antiseptic. Doing so hits a nerve and causes me excruciating pain and makes me feel as though someone has set an electric current through my chin.
He explained to me that the principal dentist was only willing to offer me 25 percent off the root canal, which is still expensive, or I could have the tooth removed for free. When I was told this, I was distraught. I have been through excessive amounts of pain for weeks on end, with faith that they would fix the problem, and been given hope that they would be able to save my tooth, only to find out that it would still cost me a ridiculous amount of money, which I just do not have.
I was in a state of extreme panic and was furious they had not told me earlier, so I could either finish the root canal or at least have a few moments to wrap my head around the situation. I felt pressured to decide at that moment. Sadly, I lost my tooth unnecessarily due to someone else's mistake.
Whilst removing the tooth, I was petrified, as the whole experience had been traumatic. I had a panic attack and had to ask them to stop. However, I was told that I needed to relax and calm down so they could finish the procedure; in no way were they concerned for my well-being. Eventually, they finished the procedure. I left unbelievably distraught. The next day, I began to feel a numbness in my bottom lip every time I opened my mouth. The pain in my chin has not subsided.
I am really concerned about this whole situation and would love to know if they perfectly handled this, and if the numbness in my lips and chin could be permanent.
Please help.
Thank you
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
The only way you will be satisfied is to do a panoramic X-ray or OPG (orthopantomography). Then you will see the X-ray with your eyes. You can see if there is any traumatic injury happening to the nerve or if there is any fragment of a broken molar or remnant of a tooth present. Especially, the inferior alveolar nerve gets injured in the case of the lower molars.
It happens when someone is going to a dentist for the removal of a wisdom tooth. More potential mistakes happened in this case, including pain and numbness in half of the jaw from the last molar to the anterior segment of teeth in the chin area. If the root canal treatment is a success, we should see it in the X-ray.
Now I cannot decide whether your condition is good or not without an X-ray of the molar area or the full mouth. Go for an X-ray, then follow up with me here or attach me here the image of the X-ray.
You can take anti-pain drugs, Acetaminophen tablets of 10 to 15 milligrams every eight hours.
Thank you.
