Will hair regrowth occur after chemo for breast cancer?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 42 and have been diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, stage 2A. Everything online says it is the worst kind. I started chemo last week and have already lost clumps of hair. My daughter’s wedding is in six months. Will I be well enough to attend? Will my hair grow back by then? My oncologist mentioned clinical trials, but I am scared to try experimental treatments. Are they worth considering, doctor? Can I use those cooling caps I read about? I just want to look normal for my daughter’s special day.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Triple-negative breast cancer can be challenging, but with the right treatment approach, many patients achieve favorable outcomes. Hair loss is a common side effect of chemotherapy, but cooling caps, also known as scalp cooling systems, may help reduce it by lowering scalp temperature and minimizing the impact on hair follicles.

Chemotherapy for triple-negative breast cancer typically lasts several months, so your oncologist can provide a more detailed treatment timeline. Hair regrowth varies, with some experiencing significant growth within six to twelve months, while others may take longer.

It is important to focus on your health and well-being during this time, and there are many resources available to help manage hair loss and other side effects. Discussing cooling caps with your oncologist can help determine if they are a good option for you.

Clinical trials may offer promising treatments, so having an open conversation with your oncologist about their benefits and risks is essential. Prioritizing your treatment plan and staying positive will help you navigate this journey, and I hope you will be able to attend your daughter’s wedding with confidence and joy.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
