Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 40-year-old male, and I am seeking your professional advice regarding tuberculosis (TB). I have recently learned that someone in my social circle has been diagnosed with an active TB infection, and I am concerned about my potential exposure and risk. Could you please explain the modes of transmission for TB and the factors that contribute to its spread?
I am particularly interested in understanding how an individual's immune system plays a role in susceptibility and resistance to the disease. Additionally, what are the recommended steps I should take if I suspect I may have been exposed or if I develop any concerning symptoms?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Person-to-person transmission of TB (tuberculosis) occurs via the inhalation of droplet nuclei (airborne particles one to five microns in diameter). Coughing and singing facilitate the formation of droplet nuclei.
Factors associated with elevated risk for TB transmission via droplet nuclei include:
Presence of active, untreated pulmonary or laryngeal TB.
Presence of cavitary disease.
Presence of sputum with a positive nucleic acid amplification (NAA) test result for the Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) complex.
Presence of sputum with a positive smear for acid-fast bacilli (AFB).
Presence of sputum with positive Mtb culture (even if sputum is AFB smear negative).
Short time (less than nine days) to positive Mycobacterium tuberculosis culture.
For the person who is newly infected, the skin test usually becomes positive within four to 10 weeks after exposure to the person who is ill with TB.
Get a Mauntox test done in case of exposure.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards.
