What could cause a twitching sensation in the chest area?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have an unusual, strange sensation in my body. There is a twitch or spasm in the upper left chest, near the area of my heart. It has been twitching intermittently all day. I have not been sleeping well for the past three to four days, and I am currently taking a combination of Dextroamphetamine and Amphetamine: 20 mg XR and 2 x 30 mg IR daily. I suspect the lack of sleep and the medications are contributing to this issue.

Is there any reason for concern? It is annoying, but there is no chest pain or angina. My last heart checkup was about six months ago, and I was told I have a healthy heart. I am 34 years old, active, and healthy, but this fluttering or spasm is bothering me. I just want to make sure it is not related to the coronary artery or something serious.

Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have carefully reviewed your concern and would like to explain that your symptoms do not appear to be related to cardiac ischemia. The muscle twitching may be caused by possible water and electrolyte imbalances, which can also be exacerbated by Amphetamine intake.

I recommend checking your blood electrolyte levels along with acid-base balance to rule out any underlying issues. Trying physical remedies, such as applying a warm massage to the affected area, may help alleviate the discomfort. Additionally, using an anti-inflammatory medication like Naproxen could be beneficial.

It is also important to have an ECG (electrocardiogram) performed to rule out any arrhythmias or signs of electrolyte imbalances that might be contributing to your symptoms. Poor sleep is another significant factor that can trigger muscle twitching and related issues.

You should exercise caution with your medication and periodically monitor your ECG and blood parameters to prevent further homeostatic imbalances. I recommend discussing these concerns with your attending doctor to ensure proper evaluation and management.

Thanks and regards.
