What steps help control type 2 diabetes effectively?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 38 years old, and my doctor said I have type 2 diabetes. I do not understand why because I am not very overweight, and no one in my family has it. Could stress be the reason? My sugar levels go up a lot after I eat rice. Is it because of carbohydrates? Should I stop eating all the rice and bread items? I also feel dizzy sometimes. Does that mean my sugar is too low or high? Someone suggested I try herbal remedies. Are they safe? How can I know if my diabetes is under control without testing every day? Can I reverse diabetes by just losing weight? I feel scared about long-term problems like losing vision or getting heart disease. What can I do to prevent them?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Type 2 diabetes can develop even in people who are not overweight or have no family history. Yes, factors like stress, inactivity, and genetics may contribute. Yes, rice and bread are high in carbohydrates, which raise blood sugar quickly. You do not need to avoid them entirely but switch to smaller portions or whole-grain alternatives, which have a lower glycemic index.

Dizziness can be due to both high and low blood sugar levels. I suggest you start with Metformin. I suggest you consult a specialist, talk with them, and take the medications with their consent. Based on improvements in sugar levels by testing weekly, we can decide whether to reduce or add medications further. Herbal remedies may help, but their safety and effectiveness vary. Use them wisely.

Type 2 diabetes may not always be reversible, but weight loss, regular exercise, and a balanced diet can improve blood sugar control. To prevent complications, managing your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol, and having regular eye, kidney, and heart checkups can help.

Long-term success depends on consistent lifestyle changes and close medical follow-up.

I hope this has helped you.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
