What is the prognosis and survival in urothelial carcinoma?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 52-year-old female who was diagnosed with metastatic urothelial carcinoma a week ago. I am advised to undergo chemotherapy.

  1. May I know the other treatment options for this metastatic urothelial carcinoma?
  2. What would be the prognosis of the patient after undergoing treatment?
  3. Can this condition occur due to genetic reasons or any other causes?
  4. How to manage this condition effectively?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

The treatment options for metastatic urothelial cancer include chemotherapy and immunotherapy. If the patient responds well to the treatment, then many patients can benefit from radical surgery. The prognosis depends upon the biopsy report (pathology and molecular tumor profile) and PET (positron emission tomography) scan reports.

The general condition of the patient also matters, and whether the patient is suffering from any other chronic disease also matters. Yes, this condition can occur due to genetic reasons.

  1. A family history of UC (urothelial carcinoma) can double the risk of developing the disease.

  2. Certain gene variants, such as those in the mismatch-repair (MMR) pathway, can increase the risk of UC.

  3. Some hereditary syndromes, such as Lynch syndrome and Cowden syndrome, can increase the risk of UC.

  4. Genes like NAT2 and GSTM1 can make it harder for the body to break down toxins, which can increase the risk of UC. GSTM1-null genotypes can increase the risk of bladder cancer by 50 percent.

I hope this information will help you.

Kindly revert in case of further queries.

Thanks.
