What are the targeted therapies for urothelial carcinoma?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was diagnosed with urothelial carcinoma with sarcomatoid differentiation, and my doctor mentioned that this is a rare and aggressive form.

  1. How does this affect my prognosis compared to conventional urothelial cancer?
  2. Are immune checkpoint inhibitors still effective in my case, or would I need a different approach?
  3. Are there any targeted therapies specifically for this variant?
  4. Is chemotherapy less effective for sarcomatoid differentiation?
  5. What clinical trials or new treatments should I consider?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Sarcomatoid urothelial carcinoma is a rare neoplasm of the urinary bladder comprising 0.2 to 0.6 percent of all histological types. It is a rare but aggressive malignancy of the urinary bladder. It is a high-grade biphasic neoplasm with both malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. Sarcomatoid urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder is very aggressive, and there is no standard treatment for this disease. A multimodal approach that includes definitive surgery, local radiation therapy, and chemotherapy is often used.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
