Does a minor vaginal tear heal naturally or need care?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

A few months ago, I accidentally tore the skin near my vaginal opening while trying to insert my finger. The tear was minor and caused some pain, but there was not any bleeding. I am really worried about it, and it is been causing me a lot of stress.

Could you let me know if this is something that will heal on its own or if I should seek medical attention? I am feeling really anxious about it and just want to make sure everything is okay.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Based on what you have described-

  1. You used your small finger.

  2. You had a small skin tear near the vaginal opening.

  3. There was minor pain, but no bleeding.

  4. This happened two to three months ago, and you are feeling very worried and depressed about it.

The good news: It is completely normal for small tears to happen during touching or initial attempts. The skin around the vaginal opening is delicate and stretchy, but it can tear slightly if-

  1. The finger or nail was a bit rough.

  2. There was not enough natural lubrication.

  3. Anxiety or nervousness caused tightness.

Minor tears like this generally heal on their own without causing any future problems. Since you did not experience bleeding and it has been a couple of months, it is almost certain that it has already healed. There is no need to worry about-

  1. Virginity: Small tears can happen for various reasons, even without intercourse.

  2. Long-term pain: If you are not experiencing pain now, there should not be any ongoing discomfort.

  3. Infection: As long as you did not have swelling, pus, or persistent pain afterward, it is unlikely there was any infection.

Important things to watch for (but you did not mention any): While there are some signs to be aware of (like increased pain, swelling, or discharge), you have not mentioned any of those, which is great!

Emotionally, please do not let this get you down. What happened was a minor physical event and has no impact on your worth, body, or future. Many women experience small cuts from everyday activities like-

  1. Exercise.

  2. Cycling.

  3. Falls.

  4. Tampon use (if applicable).

This does not mean anything is wrong or unusual. You are perfectly normal.

In short, you are absolutely okay, and the tear has most likely healed by now. If you would like, I can provide-

  1. Relaxation tips for any body anxiety you may experience.

  2. Natural ways to keep your vaginal skin healthy and strong.

  3. Support for any other private concerns you might be carrying.

Remember, you are not alone; I am here to help and support you, without judgment.

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
