Is metallic-smelling discharge before a period normal?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a teen in need of some advice. My period is expected in about two to four days, and I have noticed a metallic smell in my discharge, along with some watery, pale yellow discharge. I am not sure if this is normal, especially since I am currently stressed. I am unable to take a pregnancy test at the moment, so my premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms might be worsening, including increased nausea and an upset stomach. If anyone has any insight into this, I would appreciate it.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
It sounds like you are experiencing unusual premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms, including metallic-smelling discharge, watery pale yellow discharge, nausea, and an upset stomach. Since you are stressed, that could be affecting your cycle, but let’s go through possible reasons for your symptoms. One possible cause is normal hormonal changes before your period. It is common for discharge to become watery, slightly yellow, or have a mild odor due to hormonal shifts. A metallic smell could be from small traces of blood mixing with discharge as your body prepares for menstruation. Stress can also delay ovulation, making your period come later than usual or worsening PMS symptoms. Nausea and an upset stomach are also common with PMS, especially if you are feeling anxious.
Another possibility is a vaginal pH imbalance or mild infection. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) can cause a metallic or fishy smell and watery discharge, but it usually comes with itching or irritation. Yeast infections sometimes cause discolored discharge but are usually thick and clumpy. If there is no itching or strong odor, it may just be a temporary imbalance. Pregnancy is an unlikely but possible cause. Early pregnancy symptoms can overlap with PMS, such as nausea and discharge changes. If you have had unprotected sex, it is best to take a pregnancy test when possible, especially if your period is late.
For now, you can stay hydrated, as water helps regulate hormones and discharge. Managing stress through deep breathing, short walks, or relaxing activities can help balance hormones. Monitor your discharge, and if it becomes foul-smelling, chunky, or greenish, you may need to see a doctor. If your period is delayed by more than a week, consider testing for pregnancy if that is a concern.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
