Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

If the only thing is a smell with discharge and no itching, burning, or pain, the most common cause is bacterial imbalance in the vagina (bacterial vaginosis).

It often gives a fishy or musty odor. Since it has been going on for months, it needs testing, not just guesswork. Sometimes yeast can cause issues, too, but that usually brings itching.

So, I suggest you do the following investigations -

  • Vaginal swab.

  • Wet mount microscopy.

  • Vaginal pH test.

  • STI (sexually transmitted infection) screening if there has been unprotected intercourse.

The possible causes of these symptoms could be trichomoniasis, a recurring yeast infection, or, in rare cases, a retained foreign object such as a tampon. However, the most likely diagnosis is bacterial vaginosis.

The condition is usually treated with antibiotics such as oral or vaginal Metronidazole, but it is important not to start any medicine without confirming the diagnosis through a swab test. Probiotics, taken orally or vaginally, can also help restore the natural balance. Vaginal washes and soaps should be avoided, as they disturb the natural flora.

For follow-up, please get a swab test done locally and share the report. Based on the results, the correct medication can be started. If the odor continues even after treatment, it may be necessary to see a gynecologist in person to rule out rarer causes.

Meanwhile, you can follow these preventive measures -

  1. Use only water for washing externally.

  2. Avoid scented products.

  3. Wear breathable cotton underwear.

  4. Stay well hydrated.

  5. Practice safe sex.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
