Why am I having slimy blood discharge before my periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am having a slimy blood discharge. My period dates would be after a week. I have had a very small amount of blood discharge previously, but this time it is comparatively more. Is there something I need to be concerned about?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concerns. It is okay for you to be concerned about the type of vaginal discharge you have, especially when it is blood-stained.

If your menstrual period is expected later this month, then you are in the middle of your menstrual cycle. Some women experience slight bleeding in the middle of their menstrual cycle, and there is also an increase in the quantity and slipperiness of the cervical mucus around this period because of ovulation.

This is a normal occurrence, and it is meant to aid fertilization if unprotected vaginal sex occurs within the ovulation period. This results in a slimy, blood-stained discharge. That is most likely what you are having. So, calm down, as there is no need for medical concern.

This should, however, stop within 24 to 48 hours. If it does not, then there will be a need to do some tests to confirm if it is a local infection like cervicitis (infection of the cervix due to chlamydia, bacterial vaginosis, or gonorrhea), cervical polyps, among others. So, kindly observe the discharge for the next 48 hours and let me know if it has stopped or not.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
