Is a fishy vaginal odor after sex a sign of infection?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I need your suggestion regarding my medical condition. My partner tells me that I have a bad odor, a kind of fishy, stingy smell from the vaginal discharge after fingering and all, but I have no burning or itching sensation, and I clean my vagina whenever I enter the washroom. Currently, I am under stress for placements and some sort of depression.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
A fishy vaginal odor after intimacy, especially without itching or burning, is most commonly caused by bacterial vaginosis (BV). This condition occurs when the natural balance of vaginal bacteria is disrupted. Factors such as stress, excessive washing (which can disturb vaginal pH), and hormonal changes can contribute to this imbalance. Other possible causes include excessive sweating, anxiety, and diet-related factors, which can alter body odor and vaginal health. In some cases, semen can temporarily change the vaginal pH, leading to a stronger odor after intercourse.
To address this issue, it is important to avoid overwashing and douching, as these can strip away healthy bacteria. Instead, rinsing with lukewarm water is sufficient. Probiotics, whether through yogurt or supplements, can help restore the natural vaginal flora. Staying hydrated and managing stress levels are also beneficial for maintaining overall vaginal health. Wearing cotton underwear and breathable clothing can help reduce moisture buildup, which can further prevent bacterial imbalances. If the odor persists for more than a week, or if there are additional symptoms such as yellow, green, or chunky discharge, pain, itching, or burning, it is advisable to see a doctor. If bacterial vaginosis is confirmed, a short course of Metronidazole (Flagyl) in oral or gel form can effectively clear the infection. If you prefer, I can also guide you on natural remedies while you monitor your symptoms. Would you like that?
I hope this helps you.
Thank you.
