Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 23-year-old male with no major health issues or complications. I had a laryngoscopy with a biopsy to remove a vocal cord polyp (the result was it was a benign wart) due to prior prolonged hoarseness of speech. I was wondering if I could use nicotine patches and alcohol (moderate consumption). I understand that nicotine is not recommended right after surgery due to the blood vessels recovering. However, I want to know if it is still a problem or if it is dangerous to use nicotine pouches after this type of operation, and if so what the complication is. And if now is considered risky, when would the safe window be to use?.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
With respect to alcohol, moderate or small amounts of it are okay. However, we cannot say the same about nicotine. Even after the surgical site is fully healed, we cannot justify the usage of nicotine in any form.
I hope it helps.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
To clarify, is the inability to justify nicotine due to unique complications it may present post-operation, or is this simply because nicotine is bad for a person in general?
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I do not see any unique complications with nicotine use, as long as you do not smoke anything, two weeks after surgery. However, nicotine being a cancerous agent can affect any part of the body when used for long.
I hope this helps.
