What could cause pain near the vulva during urination?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I was riding a bike, and I had the fourth day of my period. I sweat so much, and it hurts outside of my vagina, near the vulva, when I pee or when I ride a bike. Is it possible it is just from the sweating?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
What you are describing definitely could be caused by sweating and friction, especially combined with period blood and pad use. This is what is likely going on: since you said the pain is outside your vagina (not internal) and happens only when you urinate, there are some common explanations.
Sweat and friction can cause irritation activities like biking, sweating, and wearing pads can lead to chafing and discomfort of the vulva. Sweat, blood, and moisture together create an ideal environment for skin breakdown or minor inflammation. Period blood is acidic and may irritate the skin if it remains in contact for a prolonged time, and pads can sometimes rub or trap heat, worsening irritation.
Using scented products or soaps can also increase stinging. Contact dermatitis may occur if your pad has fragrance or if you recently changed laundry detergent, which could cause external stinging during urination due to increased skin sensitivity. Even a tiny raw spot or cut from friction or wiping can burn when urine touches it.
To help relieve this:
- Wash with only warm water (no soap) and gently pat the area dry.
- Switch to unscented, breathable pads, or try a menstrual cup if you are comfortable with it.
- Wear cotton underwear and change out of sweaty clothes as soon as possible.
- Apply a barrier cream such as Aquaphor, Vaseline, or zinc oxide (baby rash cream) to protect the irritated area.
- Avoid shaving or waxing during your period, as the skin is more sensitive at that time.
- You should see a doctor if the pain persists after two to three days, if you develop blisters, swelling, or unusual discharge, or if the pain worsens instead of improving.
Let me know if you have had any recent sexual activity, used antibiotics, or have a history of yeast infections or urinary tract infections, and I can help narrow it down further. However, based on what you have shared so far, this sounds like irritation caused by sweat, menstruation, and biking rather than something serious.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
