Can pain and throbbing occur even after five days of wisdom tooth extraction?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I got my wisdom teeth out five days ago, and I still have throbbing pain and soreness on one side of my mouth. I can barely keep it under control by alternating my Ibuprofen 800 mg and Hydrocodone 325 mg. I am almost out of Hydrocodone, and the throbbing is still there on just the right side of my mouth. It also feels like all my teeth and gums on my right side are throbbing. My throat and jaw on this side hurt as well. I felt the inside of my mouth with my tongue and found a small bump on the inside of my lip right next to my gum towards the front of my mouth. When I put pressure on this area or the area further back near the extraction site, my mouth seemed to feel better. Is this bump an infection? I do not believe I have a dry socket, as the pain is somewhat bearable, but I am concerned that the pain and throbbing seem to be. It is getting worse and being consistent rather than getting better. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

If you feel it is not a dry socket, then do not touch the area with your tongue or anything. I suggest you follow the following steps:

1. Take antibiotics for three days, along with a warm salt water gargle (very good for healing the wound) three times a day.

2. If the pain increases, either go back to your dentist or post a picture of it for me to examine.

Sometimes wisdom teeth are difficult and involve the removal of surrounding bone too. Thus it will take at least a week before adequate healing of the wound.

I hope this helps you.

Regards.
