What causes pain in the jaw, ear, and temple after a wisdom tooth extraction?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had a wisdom tooth extraction a few days back. Tooth infection and abscess were present at the time of removal. It was a difficult extraction, with very excessive bleeding, and four sutures were placed. I have pain in my jaw, ear, and temple and I feel nauseous and the hole in my mouth looks like it contains pus. My dentist said it is normal only. What is your opinion?

Please help me.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Pain and swelling are common complications after wisdom tooth extraction and can last for up to a week. You will need to give external cold packs to the site and lukewarm salt water rinsing five to six times a day to avoid any possibility of dry sockets. Usually, it takes up to 14 days for wisdom tooth extraction to heal. If you are still feeling that the extraction site is not healing in a day or two, then you can consult again. You can wait for a few more days to see the progress. After that, we can start medications.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
