Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I got a lower third molar (wisdom tooth) extraction. It was a bit more complicated than usual. How long after these wisdom teeth extractions is it necessary to wait before lower jaw surgery? After how long can BSSO be done?
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
You are asking about how long after these wisdom teeth extractions is necessary to wait before lower jaw surgery, bisagittal split osteotomy can be done. What I understood from your query is that you are going to have a surgical orthodontic operation in your lower jaw, and from the X-ray included, you are still having the orthodontic braces.
Unfortunately, we have to wait for a while before the surgical procedure. I am wondering why your orthodontist, during treatment planning and before bonding the braces, did not recommend wisdom tooth extraction?
We usually perform this procedure before the start of the pre-surgical orthodontic phase, unless you prefer otherwise.
This could save time. Usually, we wait around six months before surgical intervention to allow complete healing and bone formation. We may do an X-ray to follow and ensure that proper healing has been done already. This will guarantee proper sagittal split of the ramus of your mandible, as you pointed out in your query.
I hope this information will help you.
Thanks.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thanks for the reply.
My orthodontic treatment has been completed for more than a year, and I am now prepared for bimaxillary surgery. Before undergoing orthodontic treatment, my orthodontist recommended extractions, but the surgeon refused to perform them. Now I went to another hospital, which is cooperating with my orthodontist. But my orthodontist told me that it is necessary to wait eight months after lower wisdom teeth extraction for BSSO, and a week later, he sent me a message that I should ask for the date of bimaxillary surgery 10 months after these extractions. And I do not understand why this much long. Can it be done early?
Thank you.
