When should a doctor be consulted for a wisdom tooth infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am currently traveling and my wisdom tooth seems to have grown at a rapid rate. The surrounding gum area is significantly swollen, and there is now a gap between the tooth and gum. This has caused an infection, and I am currently on Amoxicillin for five days. Please, can you advise whether you think I need to see a dentist?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Plain Amoxicillin is not as effective as the Amoxicillin and Clavulanic acid combination, as it works on a broader spectrum of bacteria. Also, in case of any swelling, please switch to a painkiller with serratiopeptidase in it, which will help you get rid of the swelling and inflammation better than any other painkiller. Avoid any hot food and water as it will exacerbate your condition and lead to the spread of infection. Meanwhile, if the condition worsens or if you plan to stay longer, I would suggest you consult a dentist there.

I would also suggest you take the following medications. Consult your doctor, talk to them, and then take them as per their advice.

  1. Tablet Augmentin - 625 mg - BID (twice a day) for five days.
  2. Tablet Zerodol SP (Aceclofenac, Paracetamol, and Serratiopeptidase) - Twice a day for five days.
  3. Capsule Pantoprazole - Once a day for five days.
  4. Betadine gargle - three to four times a day.

Please contact me if you have further doubts.

Thank you.
