Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

It has been 24 days since my last unprotected sex. Right now, I feel a little cramp in my lower tummy and notice a slight blood spotting, but I used to take contraceptive pills within 72 hours of unprotected sex. I think I am pregnant. How do I know if I am truly pregnant? When should I use a pregnancy test?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Thank you for trusting us with your healthcare.

I have reviewed your medical history and understand your concerns. Withdrawal bleeding is a common side effect of the contraceptive I-pill. It occurs due to the sudden withdrawal of hormones from your body. However, it does not necessarily happen to everyone. In your case, you may experience menstrual irregularities, possibly due to hormonal imbalance caused by taking the I-pill. That is why it is a little unpredictable when you will receive your next period. It may come on time or be delayed by seven to ten days. Since you took the I-pill on time (within 24 hours), there is almost no chance of pregnancy in your case.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
