Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had intercourse on the seventh day of my period. I used a condom, but unfortunately, it was torn. I am not sure whether sperm entered my vagina or not. Is it necessary to take emergency contraceptive pills? Will I become pregnant? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. Pregnancy depends on the date of ovulation. Ovulation day is determined based on your period duration. For a lady with a 28-day cycle, ovulation will be on day 14, that is 14 days before periods. So if your cycle is regularly 30 days, ovulation is on day 16, and so on. The first day of bleeding is day one of the cycle. If your cycle is irregular, the calculation is longest cycle minus eight, longest cycle minus 11 is the duration of ovulation

For example, your longest cycle is 34 days and your shortest cycle is 27 days

34-8=26, 27-11=16, So between 16 to 26 will be your ovulation. The life of an egg is 24 hours and that of the sperm is 72 hours. So you can calculate if the egg is available on day seven of the period. I do not think you will have an egg on that day. If you are sure that it was the seventh day of the period, then you do not need the pill. If you have any doubt about the date of ovulation, you can take an emergency contraceptive pill, which is a high dose of Progesterone hormone, the same hormone that is produced in your body in the second half of the period after ovulation. This pill will suddenly increase the thickness of the inner lining of the uterus, making it unfavorable for a possible pregnancy to implant. As it is a single dose, it has no strength to stand on, so it falls off and you get period or bleeding of the increased thickness within seven to 10 days of taking the pill. This bleeding will be thick, fleshy pieces, dark red or brown, with slight lower abdominal pain till the bleeding is really reduced.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Regards.
