Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I recently engaged in unprotected sex, but within two to three hours, I took an emergency contraceptive pill. However, I am unsure about its effectiveness. After four to five days, I started experiencing bleeding, even though I was on the sixth day of my menstrual cycle during the intercourse. Now, with the bleeding, I am feeling anxious. Is it normal to bleed, or could there be any issues? Additionally, I had stomach pain and back pain two days ago.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.

I understand your concern and will try to help you with it.

I-Pill is the high dose of progesterone hormone, the same hormone that is produced in your body in the second half of the period after ovulation. This pill suddenly increase the thickness of the inner lining of the uterus, making it unfavorable for a possible pregnancy to implant. As it is a single dose, it lacks the strength to persist. So it falls off, and you get a period or bleeding of the increased thickness within seven to ten days of taking the pill. This bleeding will be thick, fleshy pieces, dark red or brown, with slight lower abdominal pain till the bleeding is really reduced. So, what you are having is the normal withdrawal bleeding. It means the pill has acted and there is no pregnancy. Your next period will occur one month after this episode of bleeding.

Hope I have clarified your query. Do write back if you have any more queries.
