Acanthosis nigricans is a skin disorder that leads to hyperpigmentation of some areas of the body, like the underarms, groin, knees, neck, folds of the hands and legs, knuckles, elbows, etc. It can also be an indicator of future diabetes. Excessive insulin, obesity, Addison's disease, medications like contraceptive pills, thyroid supplements, etc., are some causes.
