Phototoxicity, otherwise called photoirritation, is a reaction that occurs when the drug taken by mouth or applied topically on the skin gets activated on exposure to UV (ultraviolet) light. It causes damage to the skin resulting in cell death. They look like a sunburn or a rash. It is a common type of sun sensitivity drug reaction. It is treated by taking topical corticosteroids and applying cold compresses to the affected region.
